What Is The Cuticle?

Each strand of our hair is covered by a hard shingle-like layer of overlapping cells. It is formed from dead cells which form scales that gives the hair shaft strength and do the best job of providing protection for it. The cuticle is the outermost part of the hair shaft. The cells point downward from root to end, much like the scales on a fish, from head to tail.
